San Diego family aims to make dark times more light-hearted with their infectiously fun pandemic-inspired card game.
They say that inventing It’s Contagious!™ helped their family stay connected and make the most of life in lockdown. Now, they’re intent on super-spreading the fun with It's Contagious!®—so that families around the world can catch some hilarity in these uncertain times.
The card game was co-created by Designers and Entrepreneurs Lola & Tigre Pickett—along with their two kids—during the early months of COVID-19 lockdown, after getting bored with the existing games in their collection. Ironically, the game ended up becoming a welcome distraction when Tigre’s father and mother both fell victim to COVID-19. (They’ve both since recovered, although Tigre’s dad required 17 days of ICU treatment and was initially not expected to survive.)
The game was designed and created with an intentionally diverse, all-virtual team of collaborators, including their awesome Germany-based artist, Sarai Sánchez, and their Logo Designer, Meds Villafranca, from the Philippines.
The game art was designed with inclusivity and equal representation in mind, and they approached the virus with a playful tone; turning anti-bodies into superheroes and contagion into something you actually want in your hand.
Rich Pickett (who was nearly taken out by COVID-19) says, half-jokingly, “Hey, I’m glad I survived, so that I can laugh as my grandkids beat me (again) at this game!”
In 2018, Lola and Tigre launched a successful Kickstarter for their Wild Messengers Tarot Deck and Guidebook, raising over $30,000 in just 30 days.
